Choosing a therapist & Starting therapy....

Reaching out for help can be scary and hard. And sometimes you pick up the phone and you call but then once the appointment is set you get nervous and you are not sure if you want to really go through with it.
Reality is you are not going to know how it is until you go....
So give it a try and just see how you feel in the setting. A first session with a therapist is just getting to know them and them just getting to know you.
Sometimes people come and they seem to feel disappointed that at the end of the first hour that something wasn´t resolved for them but often times it is hard to move to resolving something in the first hour during this rapport building phase. However it does not mean that things will not get resolved. Understanding you helps a therapist help you and bring things to your attention but it also creates a safe space for a therapist to bring something to your attention when there is a rapport because they understand better how to approach bringing things to your attention without damaging the rapport.

Choosing therapist when there are so many to choose from - maybe consider these things...
Do you like to talk to a man or a woman?
Do you like to talk face to face or virtually?
Do you like someone gives you homework?
Do you like when to get alot of feedback?
Do you like when you are given a lot of questions?
It is always to talk to your therapist about what you like and what you do not like and work with them to have the therapy session the way that you would like it to be. It is important to negotiate these things rather than just being quick to move on to another therapist - it is important for your ability to ask for what you need, and to work through something that is not working and to see if the person you are working with can change what you are asking for.
